THATTA, May 29: Theft of relics from the historical sites and worship places have been on the rise in the city for a couple of months.

On Monday late hours some thieves broke into the decades old “Shiv Mahadev” temple, located at Keenjhar Lake beach some 10 kilometres off Jhampir, and decamped with a very old historical statue besides a cash of thousands rupees and valuables.

A few weeks back, some thieves had taken away precious carved stones which they had detached from the decades old graves at the historical Sonda graveyard at the National Highway.

At Makli graveyard a number of cases of relics theft have been reported, but the authorities concerned did not get any FIR lodged saying that this practice in past proved to be futile.

WATER LEVEL IN KEENJHAR: The continuous decline of water level in the Keenjhar Lake, which has now reached 44.12 feet gauge, is depriving Karachi of its 50 million gallon water every day.

If this continues for a month, it will create acute water crisis for the people of Karachi, Dawn has learnt here from reliable sources.

Sources confirmed that one month back when President Pervez Musharraf had inaugurated a new water supply scheme (K-III) to Karachi, the water level in the lake was slightly 45 feet above the dead level.

The water level has been declining ever since.
