GUJRANWALA, Feb 23: Taking serious notice of exoneration of a rice miller who injured the son of a journalist, the Gujranwala Range DIG on Wednesday ordered an inquiry against the SHO who was part of the investigation team.

DIG Chaudhry Altaf Qamar has directed DPO Dr Arif Mushtaq to submit his report after conducting an inquiry against the SHO. Reports said miller Akhtar and his gunman Tariq Mahmood were booked by Gakkhar police for injuring Kashif Abdullah, son of journalist Abdullah Khalid, a month ago. The police arrested the gunman and recovered from his possession a rifle, but the miller got an interim bail from court.

Later, SHO Chaudhry Hashim Mahmood, who was investigating, exonerated him of the charge. The victim is still under treatment at the Mayo Hospital in Lahore. Meanwhile, heirs to the victim and journalists of Gakkhar Town and other areas in the district protested against the SHO for letting the culprit go scot free.

A delegation of journalists, led by Akram Malik, called on DIG Chaudhry Altaf Qamar and demanded that punitive action should be taken against the SHO and the investigating officer through an impartial inquiry. The DPO has changed the investigation on the request of the complainant and inducted the Wazirabad ASP inquiry officer.
