DADU, Dec 10: Cases of karo-kari are rising in Sindh because of the feudal system enjoying support of the government. This was stated by speakers at a seminar on "human rights and society" organized by the Madadgar Welfare Organization to mark the International Human Rights Day on Friday.

The district president of the People Party Parliamentarians (women wing), Ms Kulsoom Chandio, said that feudal lords were encouraging killing of women on the pretext of honour and the government had failed to stop human rights violation in rural areas.

She said most of feudal lords were involved in this practice and local administration was supporting them in these cases. Shahbaz Welfare Association President Majeed Shahani said that Sindh was providing 90 per cent revenue to the federal government but in return it was getting nothing.

He alleged that the federal government was depriving Sindh of its due rights in financial matters. He said the government was not providing basic facilities in the far-flung areas in rural Sindh and concentrating on development of urban areas.

Zulfiqar Rahojo said that officials of the irrigation department had failed in judicious distribution of water. He alleged that irrigation officials were selling water to influential landlords and pushing small growers to poverty. President of the Kachho Cultural and Education Forum, Lahino Jamali, said NGOs were not running educational centres and health projects in the district.

He pointed out that several schools remained closed for years in the Kachho belt while teachers were drawing their salaries at their homes. Dr Latif Mangi, Ali Raza Malkani, Azhar Solangi, Usman Jamali Nazim, Maulana Nawaz, Tabish Bukhari and Adeeb Malkani also spoke on the occasion.
