Published December 10, 2004

SARGODHA, Dec 9: Teachers of all the government-run educational institutions in the district on Thursday observed strike to protest against the alleged harsh and humiliating attitude of the EDO. The protest call was given by the Punjab Teachers Union.

However, no untoward incident was reported except for the arrest of joint action committee chairman Allah Baksh Qaiser and Mazhar Hussain Langrial. Some students of the Government High School No 1, Sargodha, also reportedly pelted stones on MSF student leaders, who gathered outside the school.

The PTU leaders termed the strike successful despite the interference by the EDO. They said that the arrested leaders were released after about two hours of illegal detention.

SUBSIDIZED FLOUR: Chief Minister Pervaiz Ilahi has decided to provide 10 million flour bags on subsidized rates to half a million poor and the needy families in the Punjab. This was stated by provincial food minister Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the distribution of subsidized flour bags to the people here on Thursday.

The minister said the Punjab government would pay Rs250 million in subsidy to share the burden of the poor people. He said that PML office bearers would supervize the distribution of subsidized flour bags and no corruption would be tolerated in this regard.

The PML office bearers informed the minister that around 55,195 flour bags of 10kgs each would be distributed among 13,800 deserving families during the current month.
