SAHIWAL, May 7: The district police claimed on Friday to have detected an embezzlement of around Rs10 million in its two accounts.

The police claimed that cash clerk ASI Sarfraz Ahmad escaped with around Rs3.5 million and senior accounts clerk Abdul Sattar pocketed nearly Rs6.5 million. They claimed to have recovered Rs0.5 million from Sattar.

DPO Allah Bakhsh has suspended the cash clerk from service. The alleged bungling surfaced when the DPO refused to sign the TA/DA bills of the staff of the duration of his predecessors and relatives of the deceased policemen complained about the non-receipt of compensation from the police welfare fund.

The ASI of the police lines escaped with the cash and later his wife staged a drama of his kidnap and expressed fear that he might be murdered. Sattar appropriated the amount from different funds, including TA/DA, Sports, mosque, band, welfare and dowry.

However, he returned Rs500,000 after selling off his house, the police said. He has now managed to get himself transferred to the English branch without handing over the charge of his previous post.
