KARACHI: Offal dumping irks people

Published February 20, 2004

KARACHI, Feb 19: Improper disposal of sacrificial animals' waste, filth and rotten garbage by the concerned department of the city government at Jam Chakro landfill site near Surjani is causing immense problems to the residents of the area as foul smell has engulfed the surrounding localities.

In addition to the intolerable stinking smell, mosquitoes and houseflies have stormed the households. The residents are more perturbed due to the situation as they are already deprived of basic civic facilities.

A visit to the area revealed that foul smell is now causing breathing problem and the entire area has virtually been invaded by insects, creating fear of epidemics outbreak.

The inhabitants lamented that hundreds of tonnes of sacrificial animals' waste had been dumped at the landfill site but not properly disposed of. "This is the result of sheer negligence on the part of the city government," they alleged and urged the concerned civic agencies to arrange for proper disposal of the waste. -PPI
