LARKANA, Feb 18: The Chandka Medical College Hospital is running short of funds and the staff to properly look after its three units. These units are the extension wing of Shaikh Zayed Hospital for Women with 136 beds , the urology unit with 80 beds and the paediatrics surgery unit with 50 beds.

The CMCH is running the three units without any sanctioned schedule of new expenditure (SNE), hospital sources told this correspondent. The department of urology was opened in 1988 and the extension block of the women's hospital and the paediatrics surgery unit in 2002.

The CMCH management had repeatedly written to the Sindh health department for sanction of the SNE but to no avail. The Sindh health department had not even provided staff for these units and the hospital management runs these units by temporarily shifting the staff from other places to the three units.

The management is finding it difficult to run the units from its budget. The chief minister's inspection team, that visited the hospital on 31th May 2003, recommended that staff and budget should be provided to the units. Again, the team wrote to the Sindh health secretary on 21st July 2003 in this regard but with no result so far.
