Two more killed in D.I. Khan violence

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Feb 21: Two more people were killed and six others injured as violence continued in Dera Ismail Khan on Saturday in the aftermath of Friday’s suicide attack on a funeral procession.

The death toll from the suicide bombing rose to 32 after two more injured people died in hospital on Saturday.

Police said that unidentified gunmen had opened fire at a crowd in Ghass Mandi area, killing Mohammad Zahid and Mohammad Ishaq on the spot.

The injured were identified as Faheem, Waseem, Shahid, Sajid Mahmood, Shehzad and a minor girl, Orwa.

Security forces cordoned off the area and launched an operation to arrest the attackers.

Meanwhile, joint funeral prayers were held for the 21 victims of the suicide attack amid tight security.

Army and police patrolled the streets and roads throughout the day.

Tension gripped the town and moving scenes were witnessed during the funeral.

The army was called out and a curfew was imposed on Friday. Shoot-on-sight orders were also issued. Law-enforcement personnel raided two madressahs on Friday night and arrested five people, including a caretaker of the Sirajul Uloom, Maulana Khalil Ahmad Siraj.

Announcements were made from mosques asking people to stay at home. Army helicopters kept hovered over the town the whole day.

District Coordination Officer Syed Mohsin Shah and Haji Abdur Rauf, the Nazim, announced that the curfew would be lifted at 8am on Sunday.
