ATTOCK, Jan 24: Defective security valve on main supply line of Sui Northern Gas Pipeline (SNGPL) burst near Comsats University at Attock-Kamra road on Saturday evening, suspending gas supply to the commercial and domestic consumers in many city localities including People’s Colony and Farooq-i-Azam colony.
As per eye witness and local social worker Raza Naqvi, the burst of uncovered security valve caused heavy leakage of gas. Ironically, the emergency complaint No 119 was found disconnected while other office telephone numbers were not replying to the local residents calls.
The people then informed the Police Rescue 15 and local police station, which rushed to the scene and cordoned off the surrounding areas besides restricting the traffic on Attock-Kamra road to avoid any fire incident, he said. However, because of gas leakage people started to suffocate.
He said the incident took place when some heavy material hit main safety valve.
Meanwhile, the district coordination officer Capt (Rtd) Saqib Zafar arrived at the scene immediately and called SNGPL officials.
Ultimately, after two hours delay, SNGPL team reached at about 3 pm and started repair work, which continued till filing of this report.
Five injured
Five persons, including three women, were injured in two road accidents here on Saturday.
Police said Yaqoob Masih, a resident of Madina Masjid locality, his wife and daughter sustained serious injuries, when their car collided with another car coming the opposite direction near Sanjwal Chowk on GT road. The injured were taken to a local hospital.
In another road accident, a speeding truck hit a motorcycle rider Allah Ditta near Dhoke Fateh on Attock-Fatehjhang road on Friday night, injuring him seriously. He was taken to the district headquarters hospital. The Attock city police have registered a case against the truck driver Muhammad Akram.
Meanwhile a local farmer Syed Afzal reported to the Bahtar police accusing his three village fellows -- Niaz, Imran and Shaukat -- of stealing his oranges worth Rs30,000 from his garden.

District Council session: The convener has convened the session of Attock District Council on Jan 27 at the district council hall at 11am to discus the affairs of district government and other issues.
Workers continue strike
The sacked PWD workers held a protest rally on Saturday, but this time with their children, against the Punjab government for suspension of their salaries and for acceptance of their demand.
They marched from their strike camp set up near Kutchery Chowk by holding banners and placards inscribed with slogans seeking payment of their salaries. The protestors, led by PWD Workers Union district chairman Rana Faisal Ali Khan reached at Fawwara Chowk by chanting slogans against the government and elected representatives of ruling parties from the area.
