SWABI: Rs2bn for Swabi roads

SWABI, Nov 24: The ANP-led government would spend Rs2,193 million on the repair and expansion of three main roads of the district, sources claimed here on Monday.

The sources said though the previous Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) government had sanctioned the projects but it could not execute them due to unknown reasons.

The sources said Rs1,620 million would be spent on the repair and expansion of the Swabi-Jehangira road, adding the estimated cost of the repair of the 28-kilometer Swabi-Topi road was Rs293 million and the work on the project would start next year. This road has developed huge distiches at various places.

According to sources, Rs380 million would be spent on the repair and expansion of the 25km-long Adina-Chota Lahor road, expected to be completed by June 2009.

The sources claimed that the ANP government was devising an effective mechanism to ensure quality of work on the projects.

They hoped the projects on completion would usher in a new era of development and prosperity besides creating jobs for locals.

Meanwhile, former NWFP education minister Maulana Fazal Ali claimed the credit for the projects as according to him, they were sanctioned during the MMA government. He accused the ANP of initiating not a single uplift project in the district during its eight-month rule.

Addressing party workers on Monday he called for a halt to the ongoing military operation in Fata and Malakand region and urged talks to reach a settlement on the militancy issue.
