SAHIWAL, Aug 16: A three-member investigation team of the Anti-Corruption Establishment’s Lahore office has launched an inquiry against Tehsil Nazim Umer Ishaq for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities.

The allegations have been levelled by some of the tehsil-level officials in Sahiwal.

Sources told Dawn that Union Council Goal Chakar Naib Nazim Chaudhry Zafar Iqbal, TMA tehsil councillor Sardar Muhammad Iqbal and Farid Town councillor Qari Muhammad Ismail had submitted an application to the ACE director-general, accusing the tehsil nazim and his staff of committing financial irregularities in various development schemes.

On the directions of the DG, a three-member team, headed by Deputy Director (Technical) Rashid Hanif, visited the city and first examined the development sites and then called the tehsil nazim at the office of Ashfaqur Rehman, assistant director of ACE’s Sahiwal office.

The team handed over the charge-sheet to the nazim, asking him to explain his position on Aug 18 at the same office.

The tehsil nazim is also advised to appear before the investigation team along with his tehsil officers for planning and revenue, and the chief tehsil officer.

It is learnt that the Punjab government has already seized the entire development funds allocated for the TMA Sahiwal.

DOWRY FUND: Punjab Minister for Labour Muhammad Ashraf Sohna has urged the labourers and trade union representatives to get themselves registered with the labour department and provide education to their children.

The minister was speaking at a function where cheques worth Rs2.75 million from the dowry fund had been distributed among 66 industrial workers of Sahiwal and Pakpattan. The labour department provides financial help of Rs50,000 to each labourer for arranging dowry for his daughter every year.

“This year 55 poor industrial labourers from Sahiwal and 11 from Pakpattan have been selected for the aid,” District Labour Officer Imtiaz Ahmad Safi told Dawn.

The minister announced that 20 acres had been given to the labour department for the construction of a labour complex in Sahiwal. Besides, a school would be established to facilitate the children of labourers in getting free education.
