MINGORA, June 19: A prominent local leader of the Jamaat-i-Islami was shot dead in the Kabal town on Thursday.

Zamir Khan was assailed by some people in his fields in the Kabal town, near Mingora. He was injured in the firing and was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Saidu Sharif, where he died.

No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Local people said Mr Zamir had no enmity with anybody and he was respected in political and social circles of the Swat valley.

DPO Waqif Khan said a case had been registered against unidentified miscreants. He said nothing could be said about the motives behind the killing at this point.
