LAHORE, May 4: A former chief justice of the Lahore High Court and the first federal ombudsman of Pakistan, Sardar Muhammad Iqbal, passed away here on Sunday.

Sardar Iqbal, who was also member of the Punjab University’s syndicate, was born in Poonch district of Azad Kashmir. He did his LLB from the Punjab University in 1949 and was appointed as judge of West Pakistan in 1960 and later served as the chief justice of the Lahore High Court from 1969 to 1973.

He also served as ombudsman for four years and was president of the World Association of Judges. He set up the Legal House which produced hundreds of judges and lawyers, including Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman, S. M. Zafar and Dr Pervaiz Hassan.

Federal Water and Power Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, former Wapda chairman Tariq Hamid, LHC Chief Justice Syed Zahid Hussain, former president Rafiq Tarar, Pepco MD Munawar Baseer, S. M. Zafar, PU Institute of Communication Studies’ Director Prof (Dr) Mugheesuddin Sheikh and others expressed their profound grief and sorrow over the death of the great jurist.—APP
