KARACHI, Dec 26: Some five vehicles were set on fire in Surjani Town on Wednesday hours after the police arrested three activists of the Sunni Tehrik in the New Karachi area in connection with Tuesday’s violence.

A jeep owned by a property dealer parked outside his home in Surjani Town’s Sector 4-B was set on fire earlier in the day.

The area police and eyewitnesses said that six armed persons on three motorbikes executed the job within seconds.

Two taxis and a couple of rickshaws parked in Sector 4-D of the area also met the same fate.

The police suspected the same group of armed motorcyclists were responsible. Though the area police confirmed the incident, Ameer Hussain Lehri, SP Gadap Town, denied any such activity took place in the locality.

Earlier, in a joint operation, police from the New Karachi Industrial Area and Khawaja Ajmer Nagri raided the houses of ST workers and arrested Aqeel Qadri, Hanif Jhubba and Atiq Qadri, allegedly recovering two TT pistols.

The party, however, accused the police of implicating the workers in fake cases on the behest of the provincial government and a rival party.

“During the raid, the police also detained a dozen members of the arrested workers’ families,” said an ST spokesman. “We strongly condemn the police action and demand the federal authorities to intervene, as the provincial government is loyal to a single party,” he added.
