KARACHI: Goods transporters strike

Published March 15, 2002

KARACHI, March 14: The movement of goods from the city to the upcountry came to a halt as 4,000 trucks as well as 800 containers stood motionless on Thursday at Mauripur Road and Hawkesbay truck stands in protest against the killing of a transporter.

The chairman of the Pakistan Transport Federation, Asif Mahmood, said the goods transporters were protesting against the killing of the New Chishtian Goods Transport Company proprietor, Chaudhry Abdul Razzaq.

He added that 25 such incidents, including killings, had taken place in the same area over the past four years.

He said Saddar Town Police Officer Tariq Khokhar, Keamari TPO Khurram and Lyari TPO Saleh Mohammad had met the transporters on Thursday to assure them better security arrangements in the future.

He said the goods transporters would see if the security arrangements of the police during Muharram were good or not.

“If the security arrangements do not improve then the goods transporters will stage a countrywide strike after Muharram.”
