KARACHI, July 19: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has said that there is a great potential for investors in the power generation sector in Karachi. The existing power demand is much less than the 4,000MW power requirement for the city by the year 2010, he said while talking to Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, Mehdi Safari, at a meeting held at the Governor's House on Thursday.

Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Mashaallah Shakri, Consul-General in Karachi Masood Zammani and Governor's Principal Secretary Saleem Khan were also present on the occasion.

The governor and the Iranian deputy foreign minister exchanged views on various issues of importance, including cooperation in trade and other fields.

Mr Safari said Iran was working on power generation projects in various countries and would review the situation in Karachi after carrying out a survey and make progress in the installation of generation plants while work was in progress to supply 1,000MW electricity to Pakistan.

He also showed interest in a recycling and solid waste management project. He invited the governor to visit Iran to have a better view of these projects and take a decision in this regard.

Welcoming the Iranian deputy foreign minister, the governor appreciated their offer in the power generation sector and said there was need to start work on this project in Karachi on a priority basis. The governor assured him of all possible cooperation of the government in this regard.
