KHAIRPUR, July 4: Renowned scholar Dr Nabi Bux Khan Baloch has said that the profiles of folk singers and sughars are being preserved through a computerised system by the Culture and Tourism Department and universities.

He said that sughars had played an important role in Sindhi literature and had helped preserve the originality of Sindhi language.

He was speaking at a gathering of sughars on the Chehlum of renowned sughar Faqir Abdul Rehman Mahessar in Rafique Mahessar village on Tuesday night.

Dr Baloch said that folk singers had also sung the poetry of sughars and such recordings were available. He said that late Faqir Abdul Rehman was a versatile sughar who had memorised the poetry of many poets including Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai and had a very impressive style of presenting Bhittai's poetry.

He demanded that the government should provide medical treatment to the sughars who were suffering from diseases. Sughars had proved their worth and different programmes of radio and PTV were witness to their merit.

Dr Baloch announced establishment of a library named after Faqir Abdul Rehman in his native village, Rafique Mahessar.

A number of poets, sughars and Faqir Abdul Rehman's relatives attended the Chehlum.
