MARDAN, May 27: Two persons were gunned down and two others, including a police constable, sustained injuries in different incidents here on Saturday.

In the first incident, Shah Qasim of the Piran Daga area was killed in the Mardan Khas area when he and his friend Waseem tried to escape police coming towards them.

Residents said that the two friends were sitting at the bank of the stream when Waseem cleaning a pistol fired a shot into the air that attracted the police who were on routine patrol.

Seeing the police, they ran away, but constable Zahid was able to catch Waseem and tried to snatch the pistol from him.

During the scuffle, the constable’s gun went off and the fire was received by Qasim, who died on the spot, they said. The constable was also injured.

A brother of Qasim rejected the police’s claim that Qasim was killed during cross fire with other gunmen. The police arrested Waseem.

Nazim of Mardan Khas Union Council Ajmal Khan expressed wonder at the police’s version of the case, saying that he himself took Waseem to the police station as he was not involved in the case, but the police arrested him.

In another incident, Jehad Ali was killed when some gunmen opened fire on him in the Takhtbhai area. The motive behind the incident could not be ascertained.

Another man, Momin, also sustained bullet injuries during the incident.
