CHITRAL, May 13: The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (RWSSP) has completed 55 schemes out of 126 such plans in the two years since its launch.

The regional manager of the RWSSP, Kamal Abdul Jamil, told Dawn that those remote and backward areas of the district were being covered under the programme which had been neglected in the past. He said schemes were executed on a community participation basis and, for this purpose, local people were mobilised.

Mr Jamil said the organisation was provided technical support by tehsil municipal administrations for the purpose.

He said awareness campaigns were launched from time to time to educate the people of remote areas on health and sanitation which evoked great response and interest among the people.

CONTRACTORS’ DUES: The work on the Lawi irrigation channel has remained suspended for the past three years due to non-payment of Rs5.5 million dues to contractors of the scheme.

The contractors confirmed that the department concerned had not paid them dues for the last three years.
