Power shortage hits Skardu

Published April 7, 2007

SKARDU, April 6: Power supply authorities have failed to overcome loadshedding in Skardu despite provision of a two-megawatt diesel generator by the government. The PWD had assured the people that after receiving an additional two megawatt power from the two diesel generators, evening loadshedding would be ended, but their claim proved to be false.

The town received no electricity at day time during the whole winter season so far, except Satellite Town which is mostly populated by government officials.

The PWD authorities said hydel stations were producing low power due to lack of water in channels and fresh snow melted water was yet to be released in streams and canals.

Businessmen said their trade had been hit owing to perpetual power outage.

The PWD officials said most of the people used heaters.
