KARACHI, Feb 3: Students from various educational institutions were invited to speak on topics related to physics at a programme held to mark the 81st birth anniversary of late Professor (Dr) Abdus Salam at the Usman Institute of Technology.
There were 33 presentations in all, most of them highlighting the significance of physics and its role in the development of rural areas and information and communication technologies. The students also highlighted how the various branches of physics were revolutionising societies all over the world. The often mentioned topics were alternate energy sources and biotechnology.
Dr Faheem Hussain, a former student of Professor Abdus Salam and a former faculty member of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, was the chief guest on the occasion. Lauding the services of Dr Abdus Salam, he talked about the endeavours made by the late Nobel Laureate to motivate students to learn modern sciences.
The Centre for Physics Education, which organized the event, also planned to hold an exhibition on physics, technology and development this year.—Our Reporter
