Terrorism to be crushed: Musharraf

Published January 17, 2007

RAWALPINDI, Jan 16: President General Pervez Musharraf has said that any hideout or sanctuary being used by terrorists or miscreants will be knocked out wherever found. He was speaking at the 100th Corps Commanders’ Conference at the General Headquarters here on Tuesday.

The two-day conference was attended by the vice chief of army staff, corps commanders and principal staff officers.

The president dwelt at length on the international and regional environment and its relevance to the security of Pakistan.

“Terrorism is a threat to national security which will be eliminated at all costs, and Pakistan will not allow anyone to use its soil for terrorist activities,” he said.

He rejected statements emanating from various quarters alleging that Pakistan was fighting terrorism under any pressure.

The participants of the conference reviewed the four-pronged strategy being followed in Fata. They also decided to continue to pursue measures to curb extremism and terrorism through a political process, and to take military action to deal with illegal border crossing and terrorists sheltering on the Pakistan side.

The president also briefed the participants on the ongoing Pakistan-India peace process.

Expressing optimism and hope in the process, he said the resolution of the Kashmir dispute was essential for achieving durable peace in the region. He also expressed satisfaction on the progress over Sir Creek and Siachin issues.—APP
