HYDERABAD, Dec 22: Noted scholar and intellectual Mohammad Ibrahim Joyo has said that due to interference of ‘undemocratic rulers’ in politics, political and economic situation in the country is going from bad to worse.

He said that the job of the army was confined to protecting the geographical frontiers of the country but they indulged in politics.

Mr Joyo was talking to reporters at the protest camp set up by the Jay Singh Quail Mahan where hunger strike by the JSQM leaders and activists entered third day on Friday. They are protesting against ‘enforced disappearance’ of nationalist leaders and activists including Dr Safari Sark, Asia Ballade and ‘atrocities unleashed by the jail authorities’ against the imprisoned nationalist leaders.

Mr Joyo said that the imprisonment and torture of nationalist leaders was worst kind of human rights violation. He demanded that the nationalist leaders and activists who were being held incommunicado by the intelligence agencies be produced in the courts of law as their families were living in a perpetual nightmare. He said that protest demonstrations were being held throughout the Singh province against the ‘enforced disappearances’ but the authorities had turned a blind eye to the predicament of the detained leaders and their families.

He said that the phenomenon of ‘enforced disappearances’ demonstrated that human right had become a misnomer in Pakistan.

The veteran ideologue of Sindhi nationalist movement said that no political system in Pakistan would prove successful unless ‘nations’ were given due rights.

Meanwhile, more leaders of public opinion, including Nasser Sheikh and Gaffer Mali, observed token hunger strike to express solidarity with the cause of missing activists.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT: Leaders of social welfare organizations have said that sexual harassment is one of the most common expressions of discrimination against women and one of the hurdles in social and economic progress of the country.

They were speaking at a seminar held at the press club on Friday. The event, attended by a large number of women, was organized by the Alliance Against Sexual Harassment at Workplace" (Aasha). The speakers urged the civil society to join efforts for curbing sexual harassment of women at workplace.

Dr Cahill Quiz said that sexual harassment of women at workplace was an illegal, immoral and inhuman act.

Dr Manor Jamal and Dr Shame An sari said that only lip service was being paid to the cause of women’s rights and practical steps were not being taken.
