GUJRANWALA, Nov 29: The city district council approved Rs283 million supplementary budget for the year 2006-7 here on Wednesday.

The meeting was presided over by district naib nazim Chaudhry Jamal Hassan Khan Manj while district nazim Chaudhry Fiaz Ahmad Chattha presented the budget.

The district nazim said that Rs71.050 million had been earmarked for the development work.

He said Rs143 million were allocated for the district office (solid waste management), Rs1.071 million for the executive district office (municipal service) and Rs19.670 million for the pension of newly transferred staff.

At least Rs71 million, he said, were set aside for the construction of roads under the Annual Development Programme, Rs7 million for Wasa, Rs1.3 million for education, Rs5.6 million for health and Rs3 million for fire brigade.

Mr Chattha said that Rs0.908 million would be spent on the ongoing scheme of rehabilitation of Ratta Road while Rs29.47 million had been allocated for the citizen community board (CCB).

He said that the Punjab chief minister’s grant of Rs2 billion had been increased to Rs7 billion for the projects, including construction of roads and sewer, which the chief minister would himself announce during his visit to the city shortly.

The district nazim informed the house that some 366 more sanitary workers and 28 tractor-trolley drivers would be recruited for revamping the cleanliness system.

He said around two-dozen sanitary workers, including sewermen, would be provided to each union council in urban areas.

While opposition leaders, including Taufiq Butt, Hafeez Khilji and Yousaf Sundho, criticized the treasury bench for not resolving problems of the people.
