Intellect and wit

THE 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics was recently awarded to Prof Francis Halzen for his pioneering work with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. I had the privilege of taking one of his Physics courses in the spring semester in 1978 while I was studying at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Of course, as a young student, I could not size up his stature and his extraordinary command of the subject, but the clarity and enthusiasm with which he taught were remarkable. He had the ability to take concepts that initially appeared difficult, and to present them in a way that made them understandable and intellectually exciting. I always came back from his class with a clearer understanding and a renewed appreciation for Physics.

My memories of Prof Halzen are not primarily of a famous physicist. They are memories of an excellent and engaging teacher who was approachable, patient and generous with his time. Besides, he was a very witty person and had a great sense of humour.

Decades have passed since I sat in his classroom. Yet, I have never forgotten the intellectual experience of studying Physics and the privilege of being able to walk into his office and discuss with him concepts that I found more intriguing.
