KARACHI: The city administration has increased the prices of beef and mutton by Rs50-100 per kg.
According to new rates notified by the Karachi commissioner, the new official rates of beef, with and without bones, are fixed at Rs1,050 and Rs1,350, respectively, up by Rs50 per kg compared to the rates announced in February.
The official veal rates, with and without bones, have been raised to Rs1,350 and Rs1,650, showing a rise of Rs50 per kg.
The official price of mutton has been increased to Rs2,300 from Rs2,200, up by Rs100 per kg.
However, a wide gap between the official and market rates continues to persist.
As per weekly data of the Sensitive Price Index (SPI), mutton rates in Karachi have already risen to Rs2,200-3,000 per kg in the last one and a half months, compared to Rs2,000-2,800 per kg.
The current market rates of veal with and without bones are Rs1,500 and Rs1,700-1,800 per kg.
Meat merchants have continued to blame higher meat exports. Rising transport costs, driven by LPG prices climbing to Rs500-550 per kg from Rs380 a few months ago, along with high diesel rates, have further pushed up the cost of transportation.
