PESHAWAR: Adviser on local government, communications and works, agriculture and housing, Asif Rafiq, on Monday directed the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) to prepare a comprehensive master plan to address growing traffic congestion and other urban challenges in the provincial capital.

Chairing a meeting to review progress on ongoing and proposed development projects, he called for timely completion of public welfare schemes and directed the authorities to take practical measures to improve traffic flow, according to a press release issued here.

He said underpasses and overhead bridges should be planned at traffic congestion points according to actual requirements to reduce rush and ensure smooth movement of vehicles.

The PDA director general briefed the adviser on ongoing development projects, traffic conditions and future infrastructure requirements.

Officials presented proposals for the expansion of Hashtnagri Bridge, extension of Faqirabad Bridge up to Government College Chowk and construction of underpasses at Ram Das Bazaar, Jail Chowk and Shoba Bazaar Chowk.

The meeting also discussed a traffic management plan for Town Chowk on Khyber Road to ease congestion.

Mr Rafiq directed the PDA to assess all proposed projects on technical and practical grounds and set priorities to ensure lasting solutions to public problems.

He said improving traffic flow, providing better commuting facilities and aligning development projects with modern urban requirements were among the government’s priorities.

The adviser also directed the PDA to play an active role in improving the city’s appearance, particularly along the motorway and GT Road, through better travel facilities, plantation and cultivation of flowers.

He ordered measures to improve traffic movement on Khyber Road, reduce congestion and minimise travel difficulties for residents, adding that public needs must remain the top priority in planning and executing development projects.
