RAWALPINDI: A motorcyclist set his vehicle on fire after being issued a challan for violating traffic rules at Malad Chowk in Kotli Sattian on Thursday.

A traffic warden stopped the motorcyclist after finding him riding without a helmet and a registration number plate and issued him a Rs2,000 challan.

The motorcyclist then left the spot and set his motorcycle on fire about 20 yards away from the warden, according to police.

The traffic warden informed Rescue 1122, whose team reached the spot and extinguished the fire. No casualties were reported.

Later, the police obtained a statement from the motorcycle owner, who said he had set the motorcycle on fire while in distress over domestic problems and debt.

He said he was on his way to earn a livelihood when he was stopped by a traffic warden.

He regretted it and said he would not violate traffic rules in future.

The chief traffic officer in Murree has appealed to the citizens to obey traffic rules, make it mandatory to use helmets while riding a motorcycle and operate the vehicle/motorcycle with the prescribed number plate.
