BATTAGRAM: Police arrested a teenager suspected of raping a five-year-old boy here on Monday.

A police official said that the uncle of the minor approached the Banna police station along with his five-year-old nephew, who had allegedly been subjected to sexual assault.

In the first information report, he said that his nephew returned home from a nearby seminary in the evening and started vomiting as his health condition worsened. He said that when asked what had happened, the child told them that a 16-year-old boy took him from outside the seminary to a deserted place and sexually assaulted him.

When contacted, district police officer Qamar Hayat said that police arrested the suspect and started an investigation.

Meanwhile, residents and human rights activists expressed concern over the incident and asked the government to ensure strict punishment in such cases. They also urged the government launch awareness campaigns and mobilise society against such crimes to protect children.

Rights activist Javed Khan said the occurrence of such incidents was alarming, so all stakeholders should play their role in protecting children.
