LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Monday forwarded a petition seeking installation of CCTV cameras and panic (pink) buttons for the safety of children and female teachers in educational institutions to the Punjab education secretary for appropriate action.

Justice Khalid Ishaq heard the petition filed through Advocate Rana Sikandar and disposed of the same with a direction to the education secretary to examine the plea and take necessary measures.

The petition pointed out that the government had announced the installation of panic buttons in educational institutions for the safety of children and female teachers, but no progress had so far been made on the initiative.

It said there was still no information about how many educational institutions had installed panic buttons following the government’s announcement.

The petition also proposed that guards, watchmen and other staff working at educational institutions should undergo verification and thorough background checks, with their records properly maintained.

It further requested that security guards deployed outside educational institutions be subjected to biometric verification, pointing out that they perform their duties outside schools while carrying weapons.
