BAHAWALPUR: A passenger coach of the Karachi-bound 28-DN Shalimar Express derailed between Bahawalpur and Sammasatta railway stations on Monday. However, no loss of life or injuries were reported, and all passengers remained safe.

According to railway officials, the Shalimar Express (28-DN) left Bahawalpur railway station for its next destination after a scheduled stop. While the train was travelling between Bahawalpur and Sammasatta railway stations, one of its coaches derailed.

As the train was moving at a slow speed, the derailment did not result in any casualties or injuries. However, a portion of the down railway track was reportedly damaged.

The cause of the derailment could not immediately be ascertained. Railway officials said an inquiry would be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following the derailment, the train, which was already moving slowly, came to a halt. Railway officials rushed to the scene after receiving information about the incident.

The derailed coach was subsequently re-railed during an emergency restoration operation, and the train was declared fit to resume its journey. After a delay of several hours, the train was allowed to continue towards its destination.

Railway officials said the derailment did not disrupt other railway traffic and that the down track was cleared and restored for train operations.

When contacted by phone, Multan Railway Division PRO Kaleemullah confirmed the derailment and said no loss of life or injuries had been reported.

He said the coach derailed when the train, after leaving Bahawalpur railway station, was about five kilometres from Sammasatta.

According to him, Economy Class Coach No. 11514, located next to the brake van at the Karachi end of the train, derailed with all its wheels between Bahawalpur and Sammasatta at kilometre No. 820/5.

He said the Sammasatta rescue truck was promptly dispatched to the site for the restoration operation. The derailed coach was successfully re-railed, and the railway line was restored.

The PRO said the exact cause of the derailment could not immediately be determined. However, he added that an inquiry would be conducted to fix responsibility and that any officials found guilty of negligence would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
