Website review: How quiet is our world?

We live in a noisy world; everywhere there’s noise: car horns, music, people talking, machines and whatnot! But there are also some noises that we cannot hear.

These noises are caused by the movement of things (traffic, machines, human activities), which create tiny vibrations that travel through the ground and are detected by instruments called seismometers. These instruments are usually used to detect earthquakes, but they can also pick up vibrations caused by traffic, crowds and our everyday activities.

This unique idea was picked up by The Quiet Map — a website that uses data from seismometers around the world, but instead of showing us the noisy places, it finds and shows the quietest measured place at a particular moment.

According to the website, it uses data from around 100 broadband seismometers. Every hour, the readings are checked and compared with previous readings from the same time. This is important because a city will naturally be noisier during the day than late at night, and a weekday can be very different from a weekend.

The first thing you see on the website is a map showing the current quietest measured place. You can move around the map and look at the different stations. Hover over an area and it will give you information about that location, including its name and how quiet or noisy it is compared with its usual level. You can also look at the quietest and loudest locations and check the readings from different stations.

Scrolling down will take you to “Reading the Ground”, which provides more information about the measurements. There is also a “How it works” section that explains the science behind the map in simple steps.

“Preview with simulated signal” shows how the system works using simulated data. The site also has another interesting feature: it can show the loudest measured location. This means you can see where a sudden increase in ground vibrations could be caused by machines, crowds, weather or an earthquake.

What makes The Quiet Map fun is that it turns something we normally never think about into something we can actually see. All those tiny vibrations created by our everyday activities are being recorded beneath our feet.

For all those out there interested in science, Earth, maps or just strange facts about our planet, The Quiet Map is the right website to explore.
