KARACHI: The Sindh government will progressively induct a further 1,000 electric buses into the public transport fleet by the end of the current year to modernise the public transport system across the province.

Chairing a meeting here on Tuesday, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who also holds the transport portfolio, announced that an electric taxi service would be launched in September and that 50 new double-decker buses would be brought to the metropolis in October.

Alongside these measures, new routes of the Peoples Bus Service (PBS) from Larkana to Qambar and from Qambar to Shahdadkot will also be launched in the near future.

It was also decided to open a section of the mixed-traffic lane on University Road in Karachi to the public in September, to improve traffic flow.

The senior minister directed that all depots of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project be completed as soon as possible within the stipulated timelines, and that the new PBS routes from Larkana to Shahdadkot be made operational without delay.
