RAWALPINDI: Light to heavy rain lashed Rawalpindi, inundating low-lying areas and bringing down the temperature.

The rain began in the morning and continued until the afternoon with brief intervals, lowering the temperature to 27 degrees Celsius.

Several low-lying areas in the city and cantonment were submerged by rainwater.

The district administration, Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), Civil Defence Department and Rescue 1122 remained on high alert to deal with any emergency.

According to the Meteorological Department, 14 millimetres (mm) of rainfall was recorded at Bokra and 3mm at the Airport in Islamabad.

In Rawalpindi, 3mm of rain was recorded at Kattarian, 14mm at Pirwadhai, 41mm at Katcheri, 31mm at Gawalmandi and 20mm at Chaklala.

The Met Office has forecast more rain in the twin cities during the next 24 hours.

A Met official said monsoon currents were continuously penetrating the upper and central parts of the country.

“A westerly wave is also affecting the upper parts of the country and is likely to persist during the next 24 hours,” he said.

He said rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms was expected in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, upper and central Punjab and northeastern Balochistan.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall may also occur during the period, while hot and humid weather is expected in the southern parts of the country.

A major drain in Dhok Khaba and surrounding areas overflowed, causing rainwater to enter residential neighbourhoods.

Around two to three feet of water entered homes and shops.

The accumulation of two to three feet of water on a main road disrupted traffic, leaving several vehicles, including an ambulance, stranded.

Residents and traders said the area’s small and large drains had not been cleaned for a long time, while garbage in vacant plots had also not been removed.

According to Wasa officials, teams reached the affected area and began drainage operations using water pumps and heavy machinery to clear the accumulated rainwater.
