THE latest events at Al-Aqsa Mosque reflect the growing impunity with which extremist Israeli settlers operate. Under police escort, a group entered the compound and staged a nationalist display, raising Israeli flags near the Dome of the Rock and singing the Israeli national anthem. Al-Aqsa sits at the heart of a long-standing arrangement intended to preserve peace at a location sacred to multiple faiths. Actions that interfere with those understandings carry consequences beyond the mosque’s walls. The incident comes amid deepening tensions across the occupied Palestinian territories. Since the Gaza war began, violence in the West Bank has intensified, settlements have expanded and Palestinian movement remains heavily restricted. Against this backdrop, repeated visits by settler groups come across as attempts to reshape the status of the compound.

Jordan, which retains custodianship of the site, described the latest incursion as “provocative and reckless”. Pakistan joined seven other Muslim countries in condemning the episode and warning that it violated the historical and legal arrangements governing the compound. Their concern shows how understandings that once helped contain tensions are being tested. The atmosphere is made all the more troubling by the death of a young Palestinian worker reportedly trying to cross the separation barrier in search of employment. His killing speaks to the realities faced by many Palestinians who struggle to earn a livelihood under occupation. Whether in Jerusalem or the West Bank, the message received by Palestinians is one of shrinking space, shrinking rights and diminishing hope. Israel often argues that its policies are driven by security concerns. Security, however, cannot become a licence for actions that inflame religious sensitivities or undermine internationally recognised arrangements. At a moment when the region needs restraint, the sight of flags being raised inside Al-Aqsa points in the opposite direction. Respect for the site’s established status and Palestinian rights is essential for any prospect of lasting peace.
