KP records 43 deaths in Eid incidents

PESHAWAR: Forty-three people were killed in separate incidents across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during Eid days, while over 1,400 residents were rescued in emergency situations, said Rescue 1122.

In a statement, Rescue 1122 read that the emergency services were provided in over 1,500 incidents during the first two Eid days across the province.

“As many as 1,491 people were rescued in different emergencies, while 43 people lost lives in separate incidents in various districts,” it said.

According to official data, the highest number of deaths, 14, were reported in Peshawar district followed by six in Mardan, four in Nowshera, three in Swabi, two each in Swat, Kohat and Mansehra and one each in Dera Ismail Khan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Upper Chitral, Bajaur, Upper and Lower Dir, Bannu, Buner and Batagram districts.

Rescue 1122 provides emergency help to over 1,400 residents

Rescue 1122 said that 321 road traffic accidents occurred during the Eid holidays, with most of them involving motorcycles. adding that rescue teams carried out timely rescue operations and provided first aid to the injured before transferring them to hospitals.

It added that the highest number of traffic incidents, 48, were reported in Peshawar followed by 38 in Mardan, 29 in Nowshera, 24 each in Swat and Lakki Marwat, 21 in Swabi, 15 in Charsadda, 14 in Dera Ismail Khan, 11 in Bajaur, 10 in Malakand, nine in Bannu, eight each in Abbottabad and Khyber, seven in Lower Dir, six each in Kohat, Karak and Upper Dir, five each in North Waziristan, Buner, Mansehra, four in Mohmand, three each in ORakzai and Shangla, two in Tank and one in Hangu.

Rescue 1122 said that its teams responded to 10 drowning cases as it had established temporary water rescue camps at dams, rivers and tourist spots across the province.

It added that professional divers along with rescue boats, life jackets and other equipment were deployed at sensitive locations.

Rescue 1122 said two drowning cases each were reported in Peshawar, Swabi and Upper Dir and one each in Bannu, Lower Dir, Mansehra and Abbottabad districts.

It added that two explosions were reported in Dera Ismail Khan and Karak districts each.

Rescue 1122 said it responded to 992 medical emergencies, shifting patients to nearby hospitals in the province, while response was extended to 101 fire incidents. Emergency teams remained active during Eid holidays to control fires and prevent further losses, according to it.

The rescue service also said it handled 56 other emergency and 32 crime-related cases.

In view of the ongoing heatwave, it also set up response camps in different districts, with emergency medical technicians, first aid facilities and essential medicines available.

Rescue 1122 Director General Shah Fahad appreciated the efforts of the personnel who, he said, continued emergency operations during Eid holidays and remained available to serve people round the clock.

“Rescue 1122 is committed to protecting lives and providing timely emergency response services across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” he said.

Meanwhile, 77 people were injured in traffic accidents during Eid days in different areas of Wana, Birmal and Shakai tehsils of Lower South Waziristan tribal district, said the Wana district headquarters hospital.

In a report, the hospital said several accidents occurred on main roads and internal roads during the Eid holidays, with most of the victims being motorcycle riders.

Medical superintendent of the hospital Dr Jan Mohammad told Dawn on Friday that speeding, violation of traffic rules and failure to adopt safety measures while riding motorcycles were the main causes behind the accidents.

Dr Jan said that the injured were taken to the DHQ hospital where staff members of the emergency care department were placed on alert.

He added that the hospital implemented a special emergency plan during Eid to deal with any eventuality.

“The injured were provided the best possible treatment at the hospital before being discharged,” he said.
