LAKKI MARWAT: Local elders have asked the irrigation department to release water in the Marwat canal to reduce the woes of farmers and enable them to have sufficient water for irrigation purposes.

During a visit to the canal on Friday, Tehreek Haqooq-i-Lakki Marwat chairman Engineer Ihsanullah Khan and other elders said that the availability of water in the Marwat canal was a matter of life and death for local farmers, as they were fully dependent on the canal to irrigate their lands.

“Breaches and leakages at various points have delayed the release of water in the canal,” they said quoting irrigation officials.

They asked the officials concerned to repair the breaches without any delay to restore water in the canal.

“If there is water in the canal, farmers will get good crops and enhanced yield,” they added.

Eng Ihsan said that he would take up the matter with the executive engineer and provincial secretary of the irrigation department to ensure release of sufficient water in the Marwat canal within the next couple of weeks.

He also demanded of the district administration and police to provide security to the contractor so that he could execute repair work on the plugging breaches and leakages without any hindrance.
