US Vice President JD Vance says Washington and Iran have made a lot of progress in their talks and neither side wants to see a resumption of the military campaign, Reuters reports.

“We think that we’ve made a lot of progress. We think the Iranians want to make a deal,” Vance tells reporters at a White House briefing.

“We want to keep the number of countries that have nuclear weapons small, and that’s why Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” he adds. “That’s what we’re trying to accomplish in negotiations.”

“What we did here was we effectively degraded their conventional military capability. That has been successfully done,” Vance explains.

“Where we are now is that the President has told us to aggressively negotiate with the Iranians. Why did I go to Islamabad, Pakistan? … Because we wanted to show a sign of good faith, that the Vice President of the United States is willing to cut a deal, so long as the Iranians are willing to meet us, again, on that core issue of never having a nuclear weapon.”
