KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday directed officials concerned to ensure timely completion of all development projects and adopt long-term urban planning solutions to address Karachi’s growing traffic and infrastructure challenges.

He said this while chairing a meeting held at the CM House to review 10 major infrastructure and road development projects worth over Rs10 billion to improve traffic flow, urban connectivity, drainage and road infrastructure across Karachi.

The projects include construction of two flyovers at Power House Chowrangi and 4-K Chowrangi in North Karachi, rehabilitation of roads in Clifton Blocks 1 to 5 connecting Marine Drive, construction of an alternate corridor from Malir Court to Landhi, reconstruction of the Mehrun Nisa Hospital Road in Korangi, construction of Football Stadium Baldia Road, road connecting Gulzar-i-Hijri with M-9, Sharea Faisal beautification, etc.

All these projects are being executed by the Local Government Department through the Karachi Development Authority (KDA).

Speaking on the occasion, the CM said Karachi’s growing population and traffic burden required integrated planning and rapid implementation of infrastructure projects.

“Our objective is to provide Karachi’s citizens with safer, faster and modern road infrastructure that improves mobility and reduces traffic congestion across the city,” he said.

He directed all departments to ensure close coordination so that development schemes could be completed within stipulated timelines and without compromising quality standards.

According to a press statement, the meeting reviewed the proposed construction of two flyovers — one at Power House Chowrangi in North Karachi and another at 4-K Chowrangi — estimated to cost Rs2.5bn and Rs2.37bn, respectively.

Mr Shah directed the authorities to finalise planning and ensure both projects were designed with future traffic requirements in mind.

The meeting also reviewed the rehabilitation of roads in five blocks of Clifton connecting Marine Drive Road.

The Rs600 million project includes road resurfacing, drainage improvement, culverts, rehabilitation of Bilawal Chowrangi drain and strengthening connectivity along the coastal corridor.

The chief minister directed that drainage systems be improved alongside road rehabilitation to prevent recurring urban flooding and road damage during monsoon rains.

Regarding construction of an alternate corridor from Malir Court to Landhi, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab briefed the CM that the project would cost Rs582m and expected to ease pressure on residential neighbourhoods by diverting traffic towards Shahrah-i-Bhutto.

A proposal for widening and rehabilitation of Haji Camp Road from Moulvi Tamizuddin Khan Road to Mai Kolachi was also presented.

LG Minister Nasir Shah and Mayor Wahab strongly supported the project and inform the CM that it would facilitate smoother movement of commuter and port-related traffic and improve access to Mai Kolachi and adjoining commercial areas.

The chief minister directed the LG minister to submit the scheme for approval so that work could be started on it.

He directed the KDA and the LG department to remove bottlenecks delaying execution of schemes and instructed officials to ensure transparency, proper supervision and timely completion of all projects.

“Karachi is the economic engine of Pakistan, and improving its road network and urban infrastructure is among our top priorities,” he said. “Every project must directly benefit citizens by reducing travel time, improving safety and facilitating economic activity,” he said, according to the statement.

The LG minister said the subordinate wings like the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and KDA were implementing development projects across Karachi under a comprehensive urban improvement strategy envisaged by the chief minister.

“These schemes are designed to resolve long-standing traffic and infrastructure problems faced by Karachi’s residents,” the CM told the meeting. “We are committed to completing these projects efficiently and transparently so that people can see practical improvement in their daily lives.”

He added that the government was focusing not only on road construction but also on drainage, sewerage, traffic management and beautification to ensure long-term sustainability of infrastructure development across the city.

The meeting was also attended by Planning & Development Minister Jam Khan Shoro, Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah, Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, Planning and Development Chairman Najam Shah, LG Secretary Waseem Shamshad, Finance Secretary Fayaz Jatoi, Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation CEO Ahmed Siddiqui, KDA DG Asif Jan Siddiqui and others.
