Aman jirga to stage sit-in for lasting peace in Bajaur

BAJAUR: The Bajaur Aman Jirga, a body of political, social figures and elders, struggling for peace and stability in the district while expressing concern over the prolonged unrest in the district here on Wednesday decided to stage a protest sit-in from June 6 for lastingpeace in the region.

The jirga made the decision during a meeting held in Civil Colony, Khar.

Senior leaders, several local political and religious parties, social activists and renowned elders from across the district attended the meeting aimed to devise an effective strategy to restore durable peace in the region by ending the prolonged unrest peacefully.

Bajaur Aman Jirga head Sahibzada Haroon Rashid, PML-N district president Malik Gul Kareem Khan, PPP leader Shakeel Ahmad, Khar tehsil council former chairman and JUI-F deputy chief Haji Said Badshah, PTI former MNA Gul Zafar Khan, ANP senior leader Shah Naseer Khan, All Bajaur religious seminaries association president Maulana Zakirullah, Malik Shaheen Khan, Malik Muhammad Shah, Malik Hifzur Rehman, PTI senior leader and Nawagai tehsil council former chairman Dr Khalilur Rehman were among the notables who addressed the meeting and emphasised concrete steps to end the ongoing unrest in the district at earliest.

The participants in the meeting, which lasted for several hours, unanimously decided to launch a sit-in outside Civil Colony Khar from June 6 until the ongoing unrest ends and durable peace is restored in the district.

Later, Sahib Zada Haroon Rashid, chief of the Bajaur Aman Jirga, while sharing details of the meeting with journalists, said that the sit-in was final and an effective step toward restoring peace in the district, a dire and pressing demand of the entire population.

“We (the leaders of Bajaur Aman Jirga) have been working for the restoration of peace in the district, but despite all efforts, no visible improvement has been seen. Therefore, we have decided to launch a massive protest sit-in to press the relevant authorities to take effective and result-oriented steps for lasting peace,” he added.

Mr Rashid, who is also the head the local chapter of JI, said that the sit-in, scheduled to begin on June 6 outside the Civil Colony, would continue until lasting peace was restored in the district.

He stated that in the light of the meeting’s decisions, besides people from all walks of life in large numbers, senior leaderships of various political and religious parties across the country would also attend the event on different days to express solidarity with the participants.

The Bajaur Aman Jirga chief said that an organising committee comprising representatives of various political parties, social activists and elders has been formed for the sit-in preparations and arrangements which will be formally launched from today (Thursday).
