THATTA: The Sindh Action Committee (SAC) held a ‘national conference’ here on Tuesday against “illegal occupation of Sindh’s lands, diversion of its water share, plans of new dams on the Indus and dispossession of local communities from coastal islands”.

A large number of political workers, civil society activists and supporters attended the conference. Those who spoke at the conference included Zain Shah (Sindh United Party), Riaz Chandio (Jeay Sindh Mahaz-Riaz), Nawaz Khan Zaur (Jeay Sindh Qaumi Party), Dr Niaz Kalani (Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz-Bashir), Ashraf Palejo (Qaumi Awami Tehreek), Nisar Laghari (Porhyat Mazahmat Tehreek), Nawaz Shah Bhadai (Jeay Sindh Mahaz), Khadim Talpur (Awami Jamoori party) and Punhal Sario.

The speakers condemned the federal and Sindh governments for facilitating “systematic exploitation of Sindh’s natural resources”.

They claimed that Sindh was faced with corruption, unemployment, poverty and lawlessness, and observed that public resources were being controlled by influential groups.

They also strongly opposed the ‘Green Pakistan Initiative’ and corporate farming. They also deplored that thousands of acres of Sindh’s lands were being allotted to the corporate sector under the guise of development.
