LAKKI MARWAT: Police foiled a bid to smuggle a large cache of arms and ammunition to Punjab by arresting an inter-provincial weapons smuggler in Lakki Marwat on Monday.

District police officer Nazir Khan said the police stopped a pick-up truck at a temporary checkpoint in the Serai Naurang town and, during a search, seized 18 pistols, 36 magazines and a large number of bullets from the hidden cavities of the vehicle.

Mr Khan said a suspect, identified as Noor Nawaz, a resident of Landi Mir Salam Sulemankhel, was arrested, and a case was registered against him.

Meanwhile, the Karak police arrested four suspects, including a proclaimed offender and two drug traffickers, during a search and strike operation on Monday.

District police officer Imran Khan told Dawn that the operation was simultaneously launched in the rural and urban areas.

He said cops arrested a drug trafficker, identified as Babar Ali, in the Sabirabad area and seized over five kilogrammes of hashish, a weighing scale and money earned through narcotics’ sale from him.

He said the police also arrested a drug peddler, Najibullah, in the Latambar area and recovered over two kilogrammes of hashish, 117 grams of ice drug, a pistol and bullets from his possession.

He said police also arrested two suspects, including an outlaw, during a raid within the precinct of the city police station and seized a pistol and bullets from them.

DENGUE CONTROL: The health and education departments have agreed to launch concerted efforts to contain dengue by ensuring active participation of schools in the dengue prevention and control programme.

The consensus was shown at a meeting held here on Monday.

Lakki deputy district education officer Ms Shamshad, medical entomologist Sadia Irfan, and others attended the meeting.

Ms Irfan shed light on preventive measures, awareness activities, and coordination strategies to strengthen dengue control efforts in educational institutions.

She emphasised conducting regular dengue awareness sessions for students and teachers in schools.

The deputy DEO assured that special instructions would be issued to the schools’ bosses to disseminate dengue awareness messages among students in the morning assemblies.

Ms Shamshad said coordinated efforts by the education and health departments would help make the district dengue-free.
