KARACHI: Three police officers have been suspended over “misbehaviour” with classical dancer and rights activist Sheema Kermani, who was arrested along with other female activists when she arrived outside the Karachi Press Club to hold a press conference in connection with the upcoming Aurat March.

“In connection with the arrest and alleged mistreatment of Sheema Kermani and women human rights activists, Karachi Additional Inspector General Azad Khan has issued orders to suspend Saddar DSP Nasir Afridi, SHO-Women Police Station Hina Mughal and Artillery Maidan SHO Nadeem,” according to a police spokesperson.

“On the orders of the police chief, a transparent inquiry will be conducted and action will be taken against those responsible in accordance with the law,” the spokesperson said. adding that the police chief also directed that such incidents must be avoided by ensuring professional conduct and full respect for the constitutional rights of citizens.

The suspension was carried out on the directions of Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar over their alleged misconduct and the arrest of Ms Kermani and other rights activists, said another official statement.

The minister expressed regret over the incident, stating that he was personally saddened by what had occurred.

He also spoke to Ms Kermani over the phone and conveyed his apologies, assuring her that justice would be served.
