Attock set to become plastic-free zone

TAXILA: The Environment Protection Department (EPA) in Attock on Sunday has formally announced an ambitious plan to transform the district into a plastic-free zone, intensifying efforts to eliminate single-use plastic bags and promote eco-friendly alternatives.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Municipal Committee office, Additional Deputy Commissioner General Anil Saeed, along with Deputy Director Environment Dr Rabia Naushin, while addressing, said that under the campaign, authorities have set June 5 as the deadline for the complete eradication of plastic shopping bags in Attock.

They were of the view that all traders and shopkeepers must immediately replace conventional plastic bags with approved ones having a minimum thickness of 75 microns and a standard size of 12×16 inches.

Mr Anil, while responding to a question, has said that the district administration has warned of strict action against violators, including heavy fines, sealing of shops, and legal proceedings under environmental laws. Traders have been directed to ensure full compliance to avoid penalties. “The sale and use of substandard and thin plastic bags have been strictly banned”. He added.

Deputy Director Environment, Dr Rabia Naushin, while speaking to the media, highlighted that eliminating plastic pollution would significantly reduce environmental hazards and protect human health.

He noted that plastic waste poses serious risks to aquatic life, agricultural land, and public health.
