BAHAWALNAGAR: A former district bar association president was gunned down by gunmen at his home in the Model Town area here on Thursday night.
According to the first information report, registered on the complaint of the deceased’s widow with the B Division Police on May 1, advocate Nazeer Ahmad was sitting in the TV lounge when four unidentified armed men barged into the house, opened fire on him and escaped. Ahmad was seriously injured in the attack and died on the spot.
ARRESTED: The district police arrested a man who had reportedly murdered his cousin 16 years ago over a family dispute and fled to Sindh after spreading rumours of his death.
Muhammad Ramzan of Chak 158/7-R and his brother Yasir had a disagreement with their cousin Abbas of the same area, which was settled by the family elders. However, both brothers shot Abbas dead on Dec 23, 2010. Based on the statements of eyewitnesses and the complaint of the victim’s father Mushtaq Ahmad, a case was registered against the suspects and a few days later, Yasir was arrested by police. However, Ramzan remained untraced.
Police sources told Dawn that Ramzan hid with a friend in another district before fleeing to Sindh where he lived in hiding after changing his name. Meanwhile, Ramzan used got his SIM cards and CNICs restricted and spread the news of his death. Police also assumed that he was dead.
Almost eight years after the incident, when Ramzan became convinced that people considered him dead, he returned to Punjab, got married and settled here.
According to sources, a few days ago, DPO Muhammad Imran asked officers to complete pending cases at the earliest and the Haroonabad Saddar Police resumed work on the case.
During investigation, they found that Ramzan’s CNIC was being used at some location in Rajanpur. Upon further probe, the police reached Ramzan’s hideout in Rajanpur district and arrested him. During interrogation, he confessed to killing his cousin.
It is worth mentioning here that the other murder suspect in this case, Ramzan’s brother Yasir, had been sentenced to death in 2021.
