RAWALPINDI: A training workshop was organised for farmers under the programme to promote ginger cultivation under the Agriculture Transformation Plan of Punjab for Potohar region.

The special guest of the event was Director General of Agriculture Research, Punjab, Dr Sajidur Rehman.

On this occasion, Additional Director General Agriculture Research Dr Ghulam Sarwar, Regional Manager/Director Project Management Unit Muhammad Irfan Mann, Director Vegetable Research Institute Faisalabad Dr Muhammad Iqbal, Aamir Latif, Principal Scientist Vegetable Research Institute Faisalabad and farmers participated.

Speaking on the occasion, Director General Agriculture Research Punjab Dr Sajidur Rehman said that the Chief Minister of Punjab has introduced an Agricultural Transformation Plan of Rs7 billion for the Pothohar region.

Under this plan, he said that a programme has also been introduced to promote ginger cultivation. Under this program, a subsidy is being given to promote ginger cultivation on 100 acres in three years.

In the first year, the subsidy has been given to 10 selected farmers. Under this programme, a subsidy of Rs. 3.29 million per acre is being given.

This includes 100 per cent subsidy on quality ginger seeds, tunnel structures, shade nets and drip irrigation systems.

He further said that the Agriculture Transformation Plan will prove to be a game-changer for the Potohar region. He further said that ginger is a cash crop whose profits are much higher than traditional crops. Pakistan spends a huge amount on ginger import every year.

Director of Vegetable Research Institute, Faisalabad, Dr Muhammad Iqbal, said that the institute is providing practical training to farmers regarding ginger cultivation.
