SUKKUR: Khairpur police have claimed to have arrested 18 suspects, among them five prime suspects, in the brutal murder of Rubina alias Khalida Chandio, who was shot dead recently within the limits of the Tando Masti police station in the name of so-called honour.

SSP Khairpur Ameer Saood Magsir said that while murdering Rubina five days earlier, the suspects filmed the incident and made it go viral on social media.

In the viral video, the suspects can be seen shooting Rubina dead, he added.

The police have lodged an FIR in connection with the incident, the SSP said, adding that he was monitoring the case using all available means, including technical and scientific assistance.

The officer said that when the incident occurred, police rushed to the site and arrested the victim’s maternal uncle and grandfather along with the crime weapon.

He added that after a video clip of the incident went viral on social media, police conducted raids at various locations.

He stated that 18 individuals, including five nominated suspects, have been arrested in connection with the murder of Rubina.

The SSP vowed to bring all the culprits to justice, adding that district police had mounted an extensive search for others involved in the crime.

He added that the suspects committed a heinous crime by killing an unmarried girl under the pretext of “karo-kari”.

Those who stood by as spectators during the incident would also be arrested, the SSP said, emphasising that no one would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Home Minister Zia Lanjar, IG Sindh and MNA Dr Nafisa Shah Jillani have taken strict notice of the tragic incident in Tando Masti and have ordered a high-level, transparent investigation.

Terming the incident extremely serious and a violation of human rights, the authorities have sought a detailed report from DIG Sukkur and SSP Khairpur.
