THE recent initiatives by the Sindh government, notably the launch of the Benazir Hari Card to provide subsidies on seeds and energy to farmers, are commendable steps towards social uplift and economic stability in the province.

Similarly, the ongoing financial support through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) really underscores a commitment to vulnerable segments of society. While these programmes are highly valuable and address critical needs, a significant and already deprived community continues to be overlooked: persons with disabilities.

The population of disabled people in Sindh faces unique challenges and systemic barriers that necessitate dedicated social protection measures. It is imperative that the provincial government formulate a policy and introduce a support card specifically for disabled persons. This programme should include substantial financial assistance, such as a monthly stipend of at least Rs20,000 for individuals holding a CNIC with a disability logo.

Such an initiative would not only alleviate financial hardships, but also empower disabled persons, fostering their inclusion and enabling them to live with dignity and contribute meaningfully to society. As such, the government must address this serious issue and demonstrate true commitment to an inclusive Sindh where no community is left behind.
