SWABI: The internal inquiry report into alleged suicide of Roslan Riaz, a student of faculty of computer science engineering of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology is still awaited despite passage of 20-days.

Riaz Hussain, father of the deceased student, while talking to Dawn resented the delay in the inquiry report.

However, the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital postmortem report, according to police, stated it was an incident of suicide by hanging, as there were ligature marks on the neck, oozing of saliva from mouth, protrusion of tongue, blue discoloration of lower limbs and the body was stiff and rigid.

When contacted police officials said that they had not yet received the postmortem forensic reports which would determine the nature of the incident and they had nothing to do with GIK Institute’s internal inquiry.

Meanwhile, a senior medical officer of Gajju Khan Medical College said that such reports were always sent to Lahore because Khyber Pakhtunkhwa did not have such facilities and it was a time-taking exercise.

The incident occurred on March 8 and on the same day the GIK Institute constituted a five-member inquiry committee and also issued a notification of its terms of reference (ToRs).

According to the notification the committee was required to submit its report on March 14 but it has not completed the task till date due to unknown reason. Brig (R) Babar Miraj Shami, Pro-Rector admin is convener of the committee.

Mr Hussain recalled that on March 8, he was informed by GIK Institute officials about his sonRoslan Riaz’s alleged suicide and on the way to GIK Institute they received another call from the administration claiming Roslan had been injured in an accident.

“With renewed hope, we prayed continuously to Allah to save his life. But when we reached the university we found our son dead,” he said

He said that he had full confidence in the university administration, the police and district authorities to conduct a transparent and fair investigation. The university had assured that a report would be provided within a week. However, he said, he was contacted one of the inquiry committee members, saying that the report has not yet finalised due to unknown reason.

He explained: “We have received neither the postmortem report nor any laboratory findings that could clarify the true cause of Roslan’s death.”

Dejected Riaz Hussain further said: “I appeal to human rights organisations both national and international to take notice of this tragedy and help uncover the truth. The loss of a young life within a reputed institution cannot be ignored, he added.
