KARACHI: Two cousins were killed when a water tanker ran them over on main Korangi Road within the jurisdiction of the Defence police station, police and rescue services officials said.

Area SHO Ashraf Jogi identified the deceased as Zubair Tayab, 21, and Zohaib Zartaj, 12.

A traffic police official said the accident occurred at around 10:35am. He explained that the victims were heading towards Akhtar Colony on their motorcycle when the driver of a Suzuki van parked near the Akhtar Colony signal suddenly opened its door. The door struck the motorcyclists and they fell onto the road, where a tanker coming from behind ran them over.

They sustained critical injuries and were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where they were declared dead.

Both the tanker and van drivers fled the scene, abandoning their vehicles, which were later impounded by the police.

Later, South DIG Syed Asad Raza said police had apprehended the owner of the water tanker, identified as Inayatullah Shaikh.
